Ghana Integrity Initiative receives corruption complaints in South Dayi District

Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) on Wednesday received complaints and reports from people in the South Dayi District about acts of corruption in the District.

The complaints border mainly on dishonest use of power in access to education, healthcare and utility services.

The exercise was part of GII’s Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) mobile anti-corruption education and legal access to citizens’ initiative.

It is aimed at promoting corruption reporting and empowering citizens to help institutions in the fight against corruption under “USAID Accountable Democratic Institutions and Systems Strengthening,” (ADISS) programme of the GII consortium.

Mr Michael Okine, Project Coordinator, GII, said a baseline study in 2015 indicated that the locals were not happy about acts of corruption in the District but did not know how and where to report such issues.

He said the issues raised would be compiled into a report and presented to institutions mandated to fight corruption for redress.

Mr Okine said GII was interested in the fight against corruption for rapid socio-economic development and access to basic amenities.

He asked people in the District to engage the police, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), chiefs and family heads on issues of dishonest use of power.

Mr Carlos Mensah, Deputy Volta Regional Director, CHRAJ, asked the participants to make good use of the Whistle Blower’s Act to ensure transparency and accountability.

Mr Mallet Kodzo, South Dayi District Chief Executive said corruption retarded the growth of the District and asked that such acts were reported.

Mr Setriakor Gagakuma, South Dayi District Director of the National Commission on Civic Education urged the people to be involved in the fight against corruption because it was their responsibility to report wrong doing.
