KMA ups effort to tackle plastic waste nuisance
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stepped up its effort at tackling the growing plastic waste nuisance in the metropolis.
Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said it was working with some waste management companies to effectively deal with the situation to save the environment.
He added that marked out dustbins into which people were supposed to dump plastic waste had been placed at various points.
He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a massive clean-up exercise organized jointly by the assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Limited that, environmental sanitation was a top priority on their development agenda.
The five-hour exercise formed part of activities to mark 61 years of nationhood.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi said they needed to act quickly and decisively to prevent the city from being swamped by tonnes of non-degradable plastic waste.
He advised the people not to litter – ensure that the right things were done to keep the city clean.
He warned of the arrest and prosecution of anybody, who breached the assembly’s environmental sanitation bye-laws.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi announced that in excess of 10,000 different tree species had so far been planted in the metropolis as part of the “Greening Kumasi Project” – to restore the city to its once beautiful scenery.
