Carpenter remanded over firearms

A Carpenter, Frank Azamati on Friday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for possessing one locally manufactured pistol with 17 cartridges and (13) 9mm bullets without lawful authority.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge before the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, and was remanded to reappear on November 23.

Presenting the facts of the case, Superintendent of Police Kweku Bempah told the court that the complainants are police personnel with Combat 24 team of the National Police Patrol Unit, headquarters, Accra.

He said the accused person is a Carpenter residing at Spintex.

He said on November 2, at about 2330 hours the policemen were on duty at the Accra Mall roundabout, when they stopped the accused person.

The prosecution said a search conducted on him revealed one locally manufactured pistol with six cartridges of ammunition.

A search conducted in his room later at Spintex led to further discovery of 11 cartridges and (13) 9mm ammunitions.

Mr Bempah told the court that, upon interrogation, Frank stated that he bought the gun from a certain man who comes from Alavanyo at an amount of GHc 1,000.00.

He said efforts were however being made to get the alleged sales person.
