President Akufo-Addo commissions five more envoys
Four Ambassadors-designate and a High Commissioner were on Wednesday granted their Letters of Credence with a reminder to preserve and promote the image Ghana whose reputation amongst the comity of nations is high.
They are Mrs. Dufie Agyarko Kusi, an experienced, international public servant, who is to represent Ghana in the Republic of Korea; Madam Virginia Hesse, a former, senior civil servant, who is going to Prague, Czech Republic; and Mrs. Francisca Ashitey-Odunton, a media practitioner, who will be Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya.
The others are Mr. Alowe Leo Kabah, a lawyer and politician, Republic of Benin; and Professor Abena Busia, an internationally acclaimed academic and poet, South America, Brazil.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in handing them their credentials at a short ceremony at the Flagstaff House in Accra, said the five had distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavour, and that “they are eminently fit to represent Ghana in their respective places of accreditation, which have expressed satisfaction at their appointments”.
He asked them to at all times promote Ghana’s economic diplomacy with commendable lifestyles and to conduct themselves with honesty, compassion, humility, and to prosecute a foreign relations agenda that is people-centred.
The President said “you represent a country that, as a result of the commendable conduct of the Ghanaian people, is regarded as one of the most stable on the continent, which is a functioning democracy, governed by the rule of law, and respect for individual liberties, human rights and the principles of democratic accountability.
“We are regarded as the beacon and standard bearer of democracy in Africa, and, recently, in April, according to the reputable RMB Global Markets Research, the fourth best place to invest and do business in on the African continent. You are the most visible symbol of our country out there, and in all your actions you must guard jealously our country’s image. I am confident this is a charge you will uphold.”
Noting that one of his government’s biggest challenge was to fix the economy, President Akufo-Addo told the envoys they were voted to put the economy on the path of progress and prosperity and “indeed we have begun fixing the economy”.
He urged them to market government’s flagship programmes, the One District, One Factory; the One Village, One Dam; and the Planting for Food and Jobs, to draw the needed investments to make those interventions successful to enable the creation of jobs and rapid development of the economy.
“We are determined to create the appropriate macroeconomic environment which will attract domestic and foreign investment into these, the real sectors of our economy. You have to help in that exercise,” he said.
