Rains cause havoc in Tamale

A down pour that lasted for about an hour within the Tamale Metropolis on Tuesday, led to severe flooding and caused the death of a teacher.

Hajia Fati Bapuni lost her life when the floods swept her away in her vehicle while unconfirmed reports also have it that a school child had also been killed.

The floods also destroyed a number of property and the most hit areas includes Sakasaka, Gumani, Business Senior High School, Vitting, Gurugu and Fuo.

Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister who visited some of the affected areas as well as the Tamale Teaching Hospital, appealed for help to immediately settle the displaced persons.

He was accompanied by officials from National Disaster Management Organisation, and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service.

He said although government would assist the affected persons there was the need for the private sector to support to alleviate the plight of the affected persons.

He said the short period of rainfall and its attendant havoc meant that there were problems with planning as well as the drainage system in the Metropolis.

“I am very sad for what I have seen. The rain lasted for less than two hours and it had been fatal,” Mr Saeed told the GNA.
