Property owner in trouble over rent law

A property owner has run into trouble for breaching the rent control law.

Cecelia Donkor was on Tuesday put before the Konongo Magistrate Court and was sentenced to a fine of GH¢120.00 for failing to acquire “certificate of assessed rent” and rent card.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Joyce Banford, additionally ordered her to get these within one week.

This was after, she had pleaded guilty to the offence.

Her prosecution, followed her refusal to respond to summons by the Asante-Akim Central Municipal Rent Control Department.

Police Detective Sergeant Shaibu Inusah told the court that officials of the Department had for some time now embarked on an inspection of rented properties to make sure the owners had rent certificates, rent cards and tenancy agreements.

When they got to the place of the convict, she could not produce any of the documents and was asked to report to the rent control office to apply for these.

She, however, refused to take advantage of the window of opportunity, despite repeated reminders.

Tired of her recalcitrance, she was arraigned.
