Church wants SHS duration extended by one year

The Diocesan Bishop of the Obuasi Methodist Church, the Right Reverend Hayford Aduse-Poku, has called for the government to act boldly to extend the duration of the senior high school (SHS), education.

He asked that the length of time was increased by one year – from the current three years to four.

Addressing the 20th annual synod of the church, he said the benefits from this in terms of the quality of education, would be enormous.

The Rt. Rev Aduse-Poku welcomed the decision by the government to implement the free SHS policy, describing it brilliant – a right step, which needed to be supported by everybody.

There could be no doubt that it would bring tremendous relief to numerous children from poor homes, who might never have received SHS education, he added.

He said it was therefore important that everything was done to make sure that the policy became a huge success.

The synod held at the Obuasi-Brahabebome Mount Olivet Chapel provided the platform for the clergy and the laity to discuss the way forward for the church – how to grow it.

The Diocesan Bishop applauded the renewed fight to end the pollution of water bodies and destruction of the forest through unrestrained illegal mining.

He rallied everybody to find space to contribute to the effort towards protecting the environment.

The Rt. Rev Aduse-Poku reminded Christians to be unwavering in their faith and remain confident about the future.

He spoke of the need for them to be good example to others in their communities by refusing to be part of anything evil or poisonous to the health of the society.
