Bawku to get 3,000 Seater sports stadium

Mr Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bawku Central Constituency, has cut a sod for the construction of a 3,000-Seater Sports Stadium in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

The facility is aimed at tapping the sporting talents in the youth in the area and to promote sporting activities beyond Bawku to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo.

The facility would be a sports complex with a size of 156 by 150 meters, which would house a health center, conference halls, dressing rooms, swimming pools and cafeterias.

It would have dual foot ball pitches, which would include the main standard pitch and the juvenile ones for training.

Mr Ayariga indicated that the facility was his brainchild and that he was poised to tap and develop the sporting talents in the youth in the area because such a move was one of the best measures to engage the youth in beneficial activities to exhibit their potentials and develop them.

Mr Ayariga said over the years, he had considered sports as an activity that could bring about unity and peaceful coexistence to the people of Bawku and its environs and therefore the construction of the stadium was not misplaced.

The MP noted that sports men and women were intelligent and said following the bad planning in grooming and developing such talents in them by the educational system, they tend to perform poorly in academics.

He pointed out that if sporting talents were managed well in the country, it could always produce good results, citing the former President of Ghana, the late Professor Evans Atta Mills who became a captain for the national hockey team.

Mr Ayariga disclosed that the facility would have a sports academy that would train sports men and women academically and explained that their programmes would be implemented to give the students more space to rest for their academic work since that could not be done at the normal school level.

The MP said due to his interest to develop the Bawku area, he was funding the project himself with support from philanthropist and that it would use one year to complete. He called on all to embrace the project, as it would bring about development to the area and the country at large.
