President Akufo-Addo cuts sod for construction of National Cathedral

President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo on Independence Day, cut the sod for the commencement of the building of a national cathedral of interdenominational worship in Accra.

The cathedral, which will be constructed on the premises of the Scholarship Secretariat near the State House, would serve as a venue for formal occasions of State and other national events, as well as an interdenominational worship.

President Akufo-Addo said: “This is a gesture of thanksgiving to the Almighty for the blessings He has showered and continues to shower on our nation,” moments before attending the national parade to commemorate Ghana’s 60th Independence anniversary at the Black Star Square.

He said the State had bequeathed the land for the project but the funding for it would be provided by the religious community, expressing the hope that unlike that of other countries where it took decades to put up such edifices, Ghana’s would be completed expediently.

The President said the project had the support of the leading figures of the Christian faith, adding: “This will be a house of prayer for all people.”

Most Reverend Dr Samuel Asante Antwi, former Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, in remarks before the sod-cutting by the President, requested the Chief of Staff to provide an office for the 11 eminent clergy who would be forming the Board of Trustees for the project.
