Akufo-Addo names military top brass

President Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday named a new Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), a new Army Chief and in an unexpected move retained the current Air force and Navy Chiefs.

The Military Chiefs will act in their various capacities pending the constitutionally mandated consultation of the President with the yet to be constituted Council of State in naming the top brass of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Major General Obed Asamoah Akwa, previously the Chief of Army Staff has been appointed the new Chief of the Defence Staff. He replaces Air Marshall Michael Sampson-Oje, who goes on retirement after almost four decades of service to the Ghana Armed Forces.

President Akufo-Addo also named Major General William Azure Ayamdo, the current Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools as the new Chief of Army Staff.

The current Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Peter Kofi Fiado and the current Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Maxwell Mansteibi-Tei Nagai, who were appointed by former President John Dramani Mahama have been retained in their positions.

The outgoing CDS, Air Marshall Sampson-Oje earlier in the day called on the President to bid him farewell as he starts his retirement.

President Akufo-Addo praised him for his meritorious service to Ghana and wished him well in his future endeavours.
