Fire ravages GHȼ3m worth of property in Brong-Ahafo Region

 Five people died and property costing about GHȼ2,917,574.00, ravaged by fire in the Brong-Ahafo Region, last year, the Regional Fire Officer, Mr James Owusu-Agyei, has announced.

In all, he said, 644 fire cases were reported, compared with the year 2015 total of 633 cases, which claimed 16 deaths and destroyed GHȼ1,539,930.00 worth of property.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Owusu-Agyei, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that bush and domestic fires topped the cases.

He gave the break down as follows; bushfires – 234, domestic – 229, vehicle – 79, commercial – 33, industrial – 16, institution – 14 and electricity – 12.

He repeated the call to the people to be careful in their handling of fire, especially in the house and the bush.

ACFO Owusu-Agyei expressed discomfort with the continued high number of domestic fires and asked that everybody heeded safety education.

 He reminded all to make sure that gas stoves and cylinders were put off and electrical gadgets unplugged before they left their homes and offices.

He also urged property owners to install fire alarms in their buildings to alert occupants and non-occupants in the area of possible fire outbreak for prompt response.
