Contractors in Ho threaten to block roads over unpaid certificates

Building and Civil Engineering contractors in the Volta Region have threatened to block roads and lock facilities should government fail to pay monies owed them by Friday, January 6.

Mr Emmanuel Afetorgbor, Secretary of the Association, at a press conference, said government owed members of the Association thousands of cedis and this has rendered their companies redundant and saddled with debts.

He said it is unfortunate that after sacrificing their resources to execute projects government listed as successes achieved in the infrastructural sector, contractors were gradually facing “liquidation and loss of livelihood.”

Mr Afetorgbro said the Association would, therefore, lock hospitals, schools and close major roads constructed in the Region if they were not paid within two days.

He said GETFUND was the major defaulter, owing contractors unpaid certificates spanning six months and over and making in difficult for contractors to pay suppliers and workers because interests on bank loans “consumes” certificate values.
