President Mahama commissions new Boxing Arena in Accra

boxingPresident John Mahama on Tuesday night officially commissioned an ultra-modern sports stadium, the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom, a suburb of Accra.

The inauguration ceremony attracted thousands of people including the Minister of Youth and Sports Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Ade Coker, Harry Zakour, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe, chiefs and NDC faithful’s to the 4,000-seater boxing arena located within the stadium.

Bukom is noted for producing boxing champions hence the decision to construct the sports Emporium in the town.

The Trust Sports Emporium can also boast of a basketball court, a tennis court, a weightlifting hall and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The arena constructed with funding from SSNIT in partnership with the Trust Sports Emporium Ltd is in fulfillment of president Mahama’s promise to the people of Bukom in 2012.

The giant sporting facility, which according to the President will help revive the nation’s fall in sports, comprises an 800-seater sports auditorium, a two-storey aerobic, physiotherapy and gym block, a 300-seater conference hall and a 4000-seater open air arena.

According to President Mahama the completion of the edifice is part of government’s commitment to nurture and develop talents, who will be competitive and win laurels for the country.

He said inadequate facilities has accounted for Ghana’s poor performance at the international front. “We must demonstrate our commitment towards the development of sports by providing all the necessary resources, including investments in infrastructure to unearth and train the sporting talents that Ghana is blessed with,” he said.

He said the construction of the edifice is in fulfillment of his pledge to provide adequate and quality sports infrastructure across every region in the country to train athletes.    

He said the Trust Sports Emporium will be run commercially to offset the construction cost.

To recognize the efforts of past boxing champions, the President handed-out plaques to seven of Ghana’s world boxing champions David Kotei Poison, Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Alfred Quartey, Joseph Agbeko and Joshua Clottey.

Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye thanked the President for such an edifice in the Ga community and called on Ghanaians to vote for the NDC in the upcoming General Election on December 7 for the continuation of the development of the country.
