Police arrests mining sites robbery suspect

ArrestA 28-year-old man believed to be behind series of robberies at the Manso-Watreso mining sites has been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

John Ofori, alias Kwadwo Samuel or “Tugah,” was arrested on Saturday, October 29.

His accomplices named as Kwabena Acheampong, also known as I.K, who is the leader of the gang, as well as one Philip, Akwasi and Yeboah are on the run.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku, the Deputy Police Commander made this known to the media in Kumasi.

He said, Ofori, a resident of Manso Watreso was arrested for attacking and robbing small scale mining sites at Watreso in the Amansie-West district and its environs.

The police retrieved eight (8) mobile phones, during a search in his room and he admitted that five (5) of them were robbed from the Chinese miners during the raid with his gang.

The suspect, according to ACP Ampofo-Duku, on Sunday, October 30, this year, also led the police to a farm in the community, where two pump action guns, 12 cartridges and a single barrel gun were retrieved.

ACP Ampofo-Duku, said Ofori also admitted during interrogation, of robbing other Chinese miners of their gold and other valuables, a fortnight ago, at Manso Odaso with members of the gang.

He said during identification parade, the victims pointed out the suspect.

The Deputy Commander said the victims informed the police that items such as a laptop, Wi-Fi modem, mobile phones and GH¢3,600.00 were stolen from them.

He said investigations were still on going and appealed to the members of the general public to give information that could lead to the arrest of the other members of the gang.
