Volta Region tops election hotspots

Vote_4The Volta Region has the highest number of election hotspots in the country, says the Women’s Situation Room-Ghana (WSR-Ghana), a non-governmental organisation.

The Region reportedly has 14 hotspots, followed by Northern Region, 13, Western Region, 12, Greater Accra, 12, Ashanti Region, 11, and Upper East, 10.

The rest are; Central Region, 09, Brong Ahafo Region, 06, Upper East Region, 06, and Eastern Region, 05.

Madam Adjoa Pokua Bame, National Coordinator, WSR-Ghana said the increasing number of hotspots in the country meant more work for stakeholders for violence-free elections.

She said WSR-Ghana was keeping an eye on the spots and placed focal persons at the communities for monitoring.

Women’s Situation Room is a women’s peace-building mechanism to mitigate conflict before, during and after elections in African countries.

The WSR concept was initiated by the Angie Brooks International Centre (ABIC) and implemented in Liberia during its 2011 presidential and legislative elections.

It was also implemented successfully in Senegal and Sierra Leone in 2012, Kenya in 2013, and Nigeria in 2015.
