College of Health, Kintampo admits 1,181 students
The College of Health and Well-Being, Kintampo (CoHK) has admitted 1,181 students for the 2016/2017 academic year.
The figure represented 31.9 per cent out of 3,703 qualified applicants who applied and that has increased the current total student population to about 2600, Professor Ahmed Adu-Oppong, the Director of the College announced at a matriculation ceremony at Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
Prof Adu-Oppong advised the students to take their study seriously because the College would not entertain aimless non-performing students else it would not achieve its primary objective of training quality public health professionals for the country.
This, he said, is because the mission of the College is “to educate and train well-motivated, knowledgeable and skillful health professionals who are capable of providing quality services to all people in all settings especially in remote and under-served communities”.
That would lead to the realisation of the institutions vision “to be a world-class health university that responds to the health needs of communities,” he added.
Mr Justice Michael Baffoe, the Kintampo North Municipal Chief Executive, said developed countries had reached their heights of development not because of their natural resources but due to the quality of their human resource based on knowledge acquired through science and technology-based education.
Mr Baffoe therefore implored the newly admitted students to channel their energies to purposeful learning experiences that would benefit them as individuals and the society in general.
He entreated them to religiously and unfailingly pursue excellent virtues and flee from social vices that would divert their attention from the mission for which they were in the College.
Later the Management of the College honoured three retired staff including Mr Isaac Azindow, the first old student to become its head and Madam Rosina Opoku for their long, dedicated and meritorious services to the institution.
Mr Azindow started as a tutor from March 1992 and held various positions till March 2015 when he was appointed as the acting Director and retired in August, 2016.
Madam Opoku, who retired as Head Cook worked at the College for 37 years, from May 1, 1979 to September 27, 2016.
Mr. Azindow, after they had been given citations and undisclosed parcels, on their behalf expressed appreciation for that recognition and advised the serving staff that without commitment and devotion to duty they could not work efficiently to lift the institution to the next level.
The CoHK currently runs 14 clinical and public health programmes including Community Medicine and Health, Clinical Psychiatry and Dermatology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Registered Dental Surgery Assistant, Community Oral Health and Medical Records Management.
Others are Nutrition, Communicable Disease Control and Surveillance, Health Promotion and Social Marketing, Health Information, Community Mental Health and Field Technician.
