The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has been elected onto the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Executive Council by the General Assembly of the Confederations of African Football (CAF) election held on Thursday.

Nyantakyi came second in a close-contested election held to elect two new African representatives to the FIFA Council.

He polled 31 votes to go through alongside Guinean Almamy Kabele, who polled 37 votes. Madagascar’s Ahmad missed out narrowly with 30 votes whiles Senegal’s Augustin Senghor garnered 9 votes.

Mr. Nyantakyi will remain on the Executive Council of FIFA till March 2017.

The 47-year-old thus becomes the first ever Ghanaian to be elected to the highest board of the World governing football body.

The new FIFA Council replaces the erstwhile Executive Committee, which was disbanded following reforms in FIFA.
