How the UEFA presidential election works

uefa logoAll of UEFA’s 55 members have a vote in the election of a new president for the European football body at its extraordinary congress in Athens on Wednesday.

It means, for example, that the vote of the youngest member, Kosovo, has as much weight as the vote of Germany, the world’s biggest national single-sports federation with more than 6 million members.

The federations of the candidates, Michael van Praag of the Netherlands and Aleksander Ceferin of Slovenia, can also vote.

The candidate with more than half of the votes will be declared the winner. A second round of voting will be needed if abstentions prevent an absolute majority. In this voting round, a simple majority would suffice. If, in the event of a draw, a third round is needed and there is still no winner, lots will be drawn.
