More than 809,000 NHIS members subscribe to primary healthcare providers

NHISMore than 809,000 active members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Volta Region have subscribed to primary health care providers by June this year.

Mr Elliot Akototse, Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) said the subscription represented 96.87 per cent of total enrolment and marked the full implementation of the capitation payment system in the region.

Addressing a mid-year review of the Authority in Ho, Mr Akototse said the Authority is currently selecting Preferred Primary-care Provider (PPP) and confirming bank details of respective care providers for onward disbursement of funds.

PPP is the healthcare facility a subscriber chooses for medical treatment. The system allows for referrals to higher level healthcare facilities when necessary.

Mr Akototse said the region is widely covered in NHIS biometric registration but still has challenges reaching remote villages.

The NHIA extended Capitation provider payment system to the Volta, Upper East and Upper West regions after piloting it successfully in the Ashanti Region.
