Mr Albert Adongo, Upper East Regional Secretary of the People National Convention (PNC), has proposed that Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) should be appointed by an independent body.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, he said in instances where the Chairman of the Commission is appointed by the ruling government, suspicions have been raised in certain quarters that the individual would show bias towards the appointing authority.

Mr Adongo said to avoid such suspicions the ruling government should rather allow an independent body to select the Chairman.

“This will help address political conflicts associated with the appointment of the EC chairperson by government. The current accusations and counter accusations of political parties and other stakeholders about the operations of the EC will be minimised or put to rest if this suggestion is heeded to”, Mr Adongo said.

The Regional Secretary, who cited various instances of economic hardships faced by many Ghanaians, said both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had failed Ghanaians, and appealed to the electorates to vote the PNC into power to help turn the fortunes of the country round.
