GETFund school assembly hall project left abandoned

An assembly hall project started at the Maabang Senior High/Technical School in the Ahafo-Ano North District, with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has been left abandoned.

The project, began nine years ago – got stalled when it reached the lintel level of construction and now covered with weeds.

Mr. Kyei Sarpong, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), who conducted the Ghana News Agency (GNA) round to inspect it, said he found it disheartening that huge resources sunk into it were being made to go to waste.

The contractors awarded the job had not been sighted since year 2008 and a pile of boards meant to be used for its roofing exposed to unfavorable weather conditions and rotting.

Mr. Sarpong said the school with a student population of 750 had been struggling with inadequate infrastructure, something which had led to severe congestion in the classrooms and dormitories.

It had benefited from just one project from the government – a six unit classroom block built by President John Evans Atta Mills Administration.

He said the school’s only vehicle, a pick-up “is about 30 years old” and that it lacked a library, information and communication technology (ICT) centre, a dining hall and washrooms.

Mr Sarpong indicated that its’ classroom blocks and the girls dormitory were in bad shape.

The general environment, he noted, was not favorable for effective teaching and learning and appealed to the government to take steps to improve the situation.

He also invited individuals and corporate bodies to assist make things better for the students and their teachers.

He told the GNA that the technical department had virtually collapsed because of the lack of tools and equipment.
