Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicate that the only public cemetery in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, is full.
Consequently, families are refused certificates to bury their dead at the burial ground.

Some families are, therefore, reportedly heading towards Sokode for burial space.

A source at the Municipal Assembly told the GNA that the Assembly was aware about the situation and would soon meet the traditional authorities to address the challenge.

Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, the Chief of Ho-Dome, attributed the situation to encroachment on the cemetery land.

He explained that because the Government had not compensated the landowners, they (landowners) resold portions of the land to private developers.

Togbe Howusu said the only option now was to clear old graves for fresh burials.

He said the Assembly must also start engaging investors for the installation of equipment for cremation in view of unavailability of land and population increase in the regional capital.
