Ghana to partner UNWTO in tourism capacity development

Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, said Ghana is ready to partner United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO’s) Themis Foundation to help build capacity for practitioners in the tourism industry.

She said the Ministry was committed to reducing the deficit when it came to human resource for players in the sector.

The Minister made this known on the sidelines of the Executive Council Meeting of UNWTO in Malaga, Spain, a statement issued by the Ministry and copied to the Ghana News Agency said.

The UNWTO Themis Foundation is responsible for implementing the work programme on Education and Training of the UNWTO.

The objective is to support member states in the formulation and implementation of educational policies, plans and instruments which effectively contributed to an improvement in the quality, competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism sector through excellence in education and training.

The discussions, which were held with Mr Omar Valdez, the Head of UNWTO Themis Foundation, and Madam Elsia Grandcourt, the Director for Africa-UNWTO, was to equip players in the tourism sector to contribute to the economy.

Mr Valdez said as the educational institution for UNWTO, the Foundation was ready to offer its expertise to member countries who may express the desire to organise training for its members.

Madam Grandcourt said the Africa Commission was committed in helping its member states in areas of developing the human resource base of their respective tourism sectors.

Ghana is a member of the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.
