Tigo empowers pupils on World Telecom day

Tigo and its digital change leaders visited two of its “Shelter 4 Education” schools on World Telecom Day – Tupaa and Adeiso Basic schools in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions – to empower and introduce pupils to digital technology.

Marie Godwyll of Young @ Heart and Hayford Siaw of E-Library on Wheels and a team of volunteers led pupils to learn about and experience computers, websites, e-learning and mobile computing.

According to a statement by Tigo, the pupils were equipped with practical knowledge of Information and Communications Technology, coached on the essentials of good presentation skills and problem solving, and tasked with creating logos for imaginary charity organizations using the skills they had acquired.

Gifty Bingley, Tigo’s Director for Corporate Affairs said: “It’s thrilling to know that what we have done here today will be a life-changing moment for many of these students. We not only gave them hands-on experience with digital devices but also demonstrated how technology can be used to address environmental and social issues.”

The telecoms company said the heads of Tupaa and Obeng Yaw basic schools, beneficiaries of Tigo’s flagship “Shelter 4 Education” CSR project which built six schools for deprived communities, were grateful for the gesture.

The Headmaster of Tupaa basic school, Osman K. Eshun, reportedly commended Tigo for the initiative and encouraged pupils to apply the knowledge they had learned for future reference.

Mr Albert Amable, the Headmaster of Obeng Yaw Basic School in the Eastern region was also quoted as saying: “We are privileged to have this session for our pupils and believe it will provide a firm foundation for these kids to build the interest in information technology.”
