Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho faces a substantial ban after reportedly deciding not to ask for his B sample to be tested following his failed drugs test.

Liverpool have not commented on the news but widespread media reports on Wednesday claimed that Sakho had waived his right to examine the B sample.

Under anti-doping regulations, his decision means he effectively admits to the presence of a prohibited substance in his system and will now face a ban.

The failed test came after the Europa League tie at Manchester United, with reports claiming it was for a fat-burning substance.

Liverpool have said the 26-year-old France international will be unavailable for selection whiles Europe’s governing body UEFA continue the investigation.

The maximum ban could be four years but his Liverpool team-mate, Kolo Toure, was banned for six months by the FA for a similar infraction in 2011 when, as a Manchester City player, he took his wife’s diet pills.

A ban would likely rule French international Sakho out of Euro 2016 in the summer.
