Karl Hopfner will not run for the Bayern Munich presidency again if Uli Hoeness wants to return to the job after being released from prison.

Hopfner said on Wednesday he would “of course” make way for Hoeness if he wanted the job again and is recommended by club officials for the election at the members meeting later in the year.

Hoeness, 64, was last week granted an early release from prison on February 29 after serving nearly half of a three-and-half-year sentence for tax evasion.

He has been on day release from prison since early last year and has been employed during this period by German champions Bayern as an assistant with the junior team set-up. Hoeness is expected to make a decision on his future at the club at some stage after his release from prison.

The former Bayern player and West Germany international was general manager at the club between 1979 and 2009, and then president until 2014.

Hopfner took over as president and chairman of the supervisory board when Hoeness resigned over the tax affair in 2014. He said from the outset he would not run for the presidency against Hoeness.
