International Organization for Migration appoints Ghana Audit Service as external auditor

International-Organisation-For-MigrationThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) at its 106th council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, elected the Ghana Audit Service as its External Auditors for the next three years (2016-2018).

Ghana Audit Service succeeds the National Audit Office of India, which served as the External Auditor of IOM for two terms of six years.

Other National Audit offices which contested for the slot include those of Pakistan, Ecuador, Philippines and Kenya, a statement signed by the Reverend Joseph Kingsley Ghunney, Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Audit Service said.

The Audit Service is the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of the country and is a member of the International Organisation of Supreme Auditing Institutions (INTOSAI), a standard and guidance-issuing body on governmental auditing, recognised by governments and international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the United Nations.

The statement said the IOM established in 1951, is the leading inter-governmental organisation which works closely with governmental, inter-governmental, and non-governmental partners to promote humane and orderly migration by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

The statement said currently IOM has a membership of over 160 states and further 10 states holding observer status, nine regional offices and offices in over 100 countries.

The IOM, initially established in 1951 as the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) to help resettle people displaced by World War II, is the principal intergovernmental organization in migration and is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, through provision of services and advice to governments and migrants.

The International Organization for Migration works in the four broad areas of migration management: migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration, and addressing forced migration. Cross-cutting activities include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants’ rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.

In addition, IOM has often organized elections for refugees out of their home country, as was the case in the 2004 Afghan elections and the 2005 Iraqi elections.
