Greater Accra sanitation said to be improving under World Bank project

SanitationTen Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies (MMAs) in the Greater Accra Region have improved sanitation with 100-day action plans under the World Bank-funded Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) sanitation and water project.

A statement from the Local Government Project Coordinating Unit of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, said nine drains were built, six beaches were cleaned, and behaviour change was achieved in the targeted communities, using a rapid results approach.

Hygiene promotion was also said to be achieved in markets including awards for cleanest market stalls, and micro-finance mechanisms were set up for families to build household toilets.

The participating assemblies in the GAMA project are the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Adentan, Ashaiman, Ledzokuku-Krowor, Ga East, Ga West, Ga South, Ga Central, La Nkwantanang-Madina, and La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assemblies.

The statement said the 100-day Rapid Results Initiatives were designed by a diverse team including environmental health officers, public relations and planning officers, and representatives from civil society, assisted by the Metropolitan and Municipal Chief Executives and Coordinating Directors to create, test and refine the policy and process innovations.

The Collaborative Leadership for Development (CL4D) team of the World Bank also provided technical support in preparing the teams.

The Ministry said during the next two months, the rapid results teams will document the procedures and change in process to share their experience so that all assemblies can benefit from their findings.

The project coordinating unit said a second rapid results initiative will be launched in January 2016, expected to support the implementation of the GAMA sanitation and water project to improve sanitation access for the targeted communities.

The $150 million GAMA sanitation project has four components: provision of environmental sanitation and water supply services, improvement and expansion of the water distribution network, planning improvement and expansion of environmental sanitation services; and strengthening of municipal, metropolitan and national institutions.
