Ghana Parliamentary Caucus to discuss food security

PotatoesThe Ghana Parliamentary Caucus against Hunger and Malnutrition will on Tuesday engage civil society organizations on ways to help the country progress towards a hunger-free and well-nourished society.

Hunger Alliance Ghana (HAG), a non-governmental organization, told the Ghana News Agency that it was a vital ingredient in getting the necessary bold political commitment to fight hunger and malnutrition in Ghana.

Ghana Parliamentarian Caucus against Hunger and Malnutrition is a voluntary group of Parliamentarians composed from both Majority and Minority groups committed to support the agenda of achieving a hunger free society in Ghana by 2025.

The Hunger Free Society project is part of a commitment of Heads of States and Governments at the African Union XXIII General Assembly in June 2014.

A statement from HAG said Political Leaders were becoming more and more conscious of the responsibility to lead the fight against hunger and malnutrition at the regional level and these efforts must be sustained by more determined Political Leaders to realize this vision at the national level.

“Therefore the creation of a dedicated body of public support for action to end hunger and malnutrition in Ghana such as the Ghana Parliamentary Caucus against Hunger and Malnutrition is obvious and commendable.”

Nana Ayim Poakwa, Coordinator of HAG, said the formation of the Ghana Parliamentary voluntary Caucus against Hunger and Malnutrition shall help to remove the biggest obstacles to fast-track progress towards a hunger-free and well-nourished society in Ghana.

Thus, this will be a vital ingredient in getting the necessary bold political commitment to fight hunger and malnutrition in Ghana.

“It is in this line that the Caucus of Ghana Parliamentarians against hunger and malnutrition in collaboration with the parliamentary select committee for Agriculture and cocoa affairs through the national alliance against hunger and malnutrition of Ghana and World Vision, is organizing a dialogue on achieving a hunger and malnutrition free Ghana through policy adoption and implementation,” it added.

The main objective of the Parliamentarians dialogue on Ghana’s food security and nutrition situation is to provide opportunity for incubating new ideas and to identify bottlenecks in the adoption of a national nutrition policy- a call to parliamentary caucus.

Nana Ayim Poakwa said the dialogue also provides an opportunity for Parliamentarians to demonstrate their commitment to the fight against hunger, poverty and malnutrition by sharing with the media and other stakeholders their desire to provide alternative solutions to address food security and nutrition challenges.

This event shall also enhance their aspiration to exercise their oversight responsibilities effectively over food security and nutrition sectors for result.

HAG expressed believe that Members of parliament could actively influence Government policies, plans and budgets and consistently advocate for improved multi-sector and multi-actor coordination, transparency, accountability and alignment of all stakeholders to achieve a Ghana free from hunger and malnutrition.

HAG expressed hope that parliamentarians would have understood in clear terms their roles and responsibilities as Parliamentarians in achieving a Ghana free from hunger and malnutrition.
