Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, the Minister of Education on Friday swore in Mr Henry Annor Boakye Yiadom, an engineer, a businessman and an agriculturalist as Board Chairman of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) at a ceremony in Accra.

COTVET, is a national body set up by an Act of Parliament to co-ordinate and oversee all aspects of technical and vocational education and training.

Its objective is to formulate policies for skills development across the broad spectrum of pre-tertiary and tertiary education, formal, informal and non-formal sectors.

Prof Opoku Agyeman led Mr Yiadom to swear the official oath to at all times truly serve Ghana in his office as Chairman, and the oath of secrecy to not directly or indirectly communicate or reveal to any person, matters relating to his duty.

She said the position was being conferred on him at a time when government was re-branding vocational education and as such, there was a lot of work to be done, but knowing his capabilities, government was hopeful that he would live up to expectation.

Prof Opoku-Agyeman said there was ready support for him from the Ministry and government as he assumed his duty and whatever challenges confronted him in his line of duty.

She reminded Mr Yiadom of government’s intention to convert Polytechnics into universities as the bill was with Parliament, and therefore there was more work ahead of him.

The Minister also referred Mr Yiadom to the COTVET Act (Act 718) that guideed the operation of the Agency to formulate policies, adding that the key word was quality of education “we” are offering and urged him to use his power to support and strengthen the organisation.

She explained that COTVET was one of the flagships of  the Ministry which was doing very well, and had made impact, because it was results-driven and urged Mr Yiadom to increase the results.

Prof Opoku-Agyeman assured the chairman of the Ministry’s readiness to welcome all suggestions.

Mr Yiadom expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President, and expressed the hope that as a Board “we” will work as a team.

He pledged to bring his experience from the private sector into the operation of the Agency to be more effective so that together with his team of members their operation would leave behind good marks.
