Dr. Kwabena Donkor, Minister of Power has urged Ghanaians to be more responsible in the use of power as government implements measures to fix the current energy crisis.

He said energy use in Ghana was very inefficient, and that, if the situation did not change, investment in the sector would come to naught.

Dr. Donkor made the call during a visit to the Upper West Region, where he inspected some facilities at the sub-stations of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) in the communities.

He noted that power was no longer a social activity but rather an economic activity, which required high level of responsibility.

Dr. Donkor appealed to the media to help educate the public, to move away from the partisan sentiments and see the issue as a matter of national concern, which required the collective effort of all.

He blamed the power crisis on under investment made to the sector in the past, which resulted in the consequences Ghanaians faces today.

The Power Minister said government was however determined to fix the situation to restore businesses and increase comfort and appealed to Ghanaians to have faith in the government and learn to do the right things to support the effort.

He said government was determined to extend electricity to all communities in the northern sector to bring it up to the national average.

In that regard, 40 communities have already been rolled out in the region under the Self Help Electricity Project (SHEP), and that, under SHEP 5, another 65 communities would be rolled out.

Dr. Donkor was happy with facilities at the Wa and Tumu Sub-Stations, describing them as state of the art facilities and commended GRIDCo for the effort.

People of Chegli and Boli communities, both under the Wa Municipal, could not hide their joy when the Power Minister visited them to inspect the facilities there and expressed gratitude to the government for connecting the two communities to the national grid.

Dr. Musheibu Mohammed Alfa, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister accompanied the Power Minister round to inspect facilities in the Wa Municipality.
