Bird flu: Ghana announces temporary ban on movement of live birds

Poultry2The Ministry of Food and Agriculture on Tuesday announced a temporary ban on the sale and movement of live birds within the Accra Metropolis to prevent further outbreaks of Avian Influenza in Accra and its environs.

A statement issued and signed by Dr Ben Aniwa, the acting Director of Veterinary Services, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said: “The general public, and especially cockerel and pullets vendors, are advised to cease the practice until further notice as their movement from place to place poses a threat to both humans and birds.”

The statement said two of the outbreaks in the Region had been linked to vendors.

The Veterinary Department of the Ministry, therefore, urged the security services and the public to cooperate with the internal movement control of street poultry vendors.
