The Chiefs and people of the Ga State paramouncies, have called on Ghanaians to approach the ongoing demolishing exercise in Accra with a sense of nationalism.

This should be done devoid of political persuasions and commended the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for that bold step taken to rid the metropolis of filth.

The chiefs contended that the Korle Lagoon was a pride and a source of livelihood to many Ga Mashie people some years back, but today it has turned a death trap to the citizens whenever it rained.

Addressing a news conference at the Ga Traditional Council chaired by Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, President of the Ga Traditional Council they observed that the area around the lagoon was engulfed in filth with strong stench emanating from open drains when they visited Sodom and Gomorrah (Old Fadama) area recently.

“These among other things are caused by unauthorized structures and settlements on the water ways of the lagoon,” and lauded the AMA for their action to avert any future calamity of what occurred on June 3, recently at the Nkrumah Circle in Accra,” they said.

The chiefs also expressed shock at the unruly behaviour by some residents in reaction to the demolition exercise who took the law into their hands to destroy properties including cars of innocent people and the Coat of Arms at the Parliament House.

They described the action as irresponsible and unnecessary.

The chiefs urged the AMA to expedite action for the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to allow free flow of water to forestall the perennial flooding and pave way for the implementation of the Korle Lagoon Restoration Project.

“We will support the AMA in enforcing its bye-laws relating sanitation and illegal development,” the chiefs said, adding; “we therefore take this opportunity to congratulated the government for this bold step to address this perennial problem which had confronted the city.”
