Police arrest couple and three over cyber fraud

Cyber fraudFive people, including a married couple, have been arrested by the police in connection with an alleged Internet fraud.

They are Isaac Boakye-Yiadom and his wife, Abigail Nyarko, Richard Addai, Gideon Kyeremateng and Stephen Oppong.

A nude picture of a white lady they had used to deceive and dupe a Brazilian, Dionisio Karmakis, was retrieved by the police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwaku Ampofo Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, told a media briefing in Kumasi that the suspects were busted on Tuesday, May 12.

Boakye-Yiadom  met the Brazilian online and they became friends, after which  the scheme to swindle him of cash of 2,100 dollars started.

He presented himself as a woman and went ahead to post a naked picture of a white lady to him.

Karmakis wanted his new-found woman to join him at his base in Greece, and asked that she got the services of a travel agent to facilitate the process.

The Deputy Police Commander said Boakye-Yiadom saw this as a God-sent opportunity he could not afford to slip, forged an invoice of the African Origin Travel and Sport Tourism Company in Kumasi, and sent it to the Brazilian in a bid to deceive him to remit the said amount of money.

Karmakis became suspicious and decided to do his checks on the Internet and his fears were confirmed as the invoice proved not to be genuine.

He consequently made a report to the police after he feigned having fallen for the trap and promised sending the cash through Whirlpool.

The suspects were arrested when they were baited to travel to Accra to collect the cash.

ACP Duku said they would soon be prosecuted.
