Volta Region is cleanest in Ghana – Minister

Volta RegionMr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, a Deputy Minister for Local Government on Monday described the Volta Region as the cleanest in the country.

He said the Region represented the brightest spot for the country in terms of cleanliness and that the country could be among the best three clean countries in the world should all regions be like Volta.

Mr Agyeman made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area, to invite him and his subjects to the fourth National Sanitation Day to be hosted by the Region, at Ho, on Saturday, March 7, this year.

He said he was impressed to see shops and communities, which were ‘dirt-free’ as he drove round towns and villages in the Region and urged the people to uphold the culture of cleanliness.

Mr Agyeman said it was unfortunate that the country ranked among the last 10 unclean countries and charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to be creative and make sanitation a priority issue.

He said efforts were being made to ensure that every house had a toilet to eradicate open defecation and called for the support of traditional rulers.

Togbega Gabusu assured the Ministry of the preparedness of the people to support the exercise and asked that the Town and Country Planning Units of the Assemblies to be well resourced to avert the development of slum in urban centres.

Madam Helen Ntoso, Volta Regional Minister, said the Region was working hard to remain the cleanest and called for support from the chiefs, individuals and institutions.

At the weekend, Togbe Afede XIV, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, appealed to chiefs in the Region to support the exercise and make it a success.

The National Sanitation Day Exercise, observed every first Saturday of the month, is to promote clean environment and take governance to the people.

The Ministry of Local Government Monday morning set up an operation office at the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure a successful event.
