Interior Ministry to strengthen security at Aboadze Power Plant
The Ministry of the Interior is to construct a police station at the Aboadze Thermal Power Plant to enhance security at the entire catchment area of the Volta River Authority operations in the area.
The power generation from the Aboadze power enclave to the national grid is more than 500 megawatts therefore there is need to safeguard the power plant with sufficient police personnel to avert any mishap.
Currently, there is a police checkpoint along the main road to Aboadze, which is close to the T-3 plant while speed ramps had been constructed on the stretch to prevent drivers from over-speeding.
Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, the District Chief Executive for the area, made this known at a stakeholders’ meeting in Shama, to render account of his stewardship over the past three years.
The event, dubbed: “People’s Forum” was organized by the Assembly in partnership with Friends of the Nation (FON), a Takoradi-based non-governmental organization and funded by OXFAM.
It offered a platform for the inhabitants of the area to scrutinize the performance of the assembly and demand accountability with regards to the use of public resources.
He indicated that plans were underway to also establish a Police Command at Shama, the district capital, with the support of the district development fund (DDF).
He described the security situation in the district as relatively peaceful and commended the security agencies for their professionalism in dealing with any security threat with dispatch.
The DCE revealed that a post and a district fire station had been constructed at Shama to complement the security efforts in the area.
Mr Appiah said the assembly had taken over a modern police station, constructed by the National Administration of the Ghana Police Service at Apemenim and would soon connect electricity and water to the facility and fill the precincts of the building with chippings in view of the water –logged nature of the surroundings.
The people of Shama and its surrounding communities have benefited from a number of social interventions and projects initiated by the Shama District Assembly over the past three years which have boosted socio-economic activities in the area.
Some of the notable projects and interventions included construction of sea defence wall at the coastline of Aboadze, electrification of 17 communities, upgrading of the Shama health Centre into polyclinic status, street naming project, and free distribution of school uniforms among basic school pupils as well as the construction of classroom and administrative blocks for the district educational directorate.
The assembly had also completed 10 mechanized bore-holes in the district, five institutional latrines and offered training to 136 persons in batik, tie and dye, grass cutter rearing, bee keeping, gari and oil palm processing, among other employable skills.
