Prisons Service receives GH¢50,000 from GIFEC for computer centres

The Ghana Prisons Service has received a cheque for GH¢50,000.00 from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) to procure furniture and other equipment to set up computer centers in some selected prisons.

Mr Kofi Attor, Chief Executive Officer of GIFEC, said GIFEC would be proud to see prisoners who had benefited from these computer centers passing examinations in Information and Communication and Technology (ICT), and or gaining employments with the knowledge acquired after their release.

“It is our determination that all prisons must have computer centers. We have been able to establish ICT centers in about 18 prisons, and we are left with about 19 more to attend to,” he said.

Mrs Matilda Baffour Awuah, Director General of Prisons, expressed her appreciation to GIFEC for the continuous support of the Prisons Service and pledged that the amount would be used for its intended purpose to enhance computer literacy among officers and inmates in the various prisons.

She called for more assistance from GIFEC “to procure special equipment to undertake biometric registration of prisoners in line with international practice, and also make access to information on prisoners easily and readily available to other entities.”

GIFEC has, for the past years, donated over 300 computers and its accessories to the Ghana Prisons Service, and assisted in setting up a number of computer centers that has significantly boosted computer literacy of the inmates.
