Electrician jailed over cocoa theft

cocoaThe Juaso Circuit Court has sentenced an electrician to 36 months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing cocoa pods belonging to the Seed Production Unit of COCOBOD from a demonstration farm at Juaso.

Daniel Kumah, 30, was convicted after he had pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the Prosecution, the cost of the stolen pods, was about GH¢70.00.

Police Inspector Manasseh Obimpe, told the court presided over by Mr Alex Obeng Asante that, the supervisor of the farm,  noticed the theft during a routine inspection on December 3, at about 0600 hours.

He said his investigation led him to the house of the convict, located not far from the farm, where Kumah was seen sitting behind a heap of cocoa pods and busily breaking and removing the seeds.

When asked how he came by the cocoa, he could not give any convincing explanation and was consequently arrested and handed over to the police.

The prosecution said he confessed to the crime in his caution statement.
