Accra Metro Security Council launches initiative
The Accra Metropolitan Security Council (AMSEC), has launched stringent measures coded “Operation Let Traffic Flow” to minimize perennial traffic congestion in Accra during the period of the Christmas festivities.
Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Chairman of AMSEC who made this known at a press briefing on Wednesday said adequate Police personnel, AMA City Guards and NADMO officials would be deployed to control the incidence of traffic congestion.
He said major roads identified for the operations of towing of illegally parked vehicles included Winneba, Nsawam and Madina roads.
“Others are Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Central to Accra central,Tetteh Quarshie, Spintex Road, Danquah Circle, El-Wak, Independence Square area, Korle Bu Traffic Light, La Beach and Giffard Burma Camp roads,” he enumerated.
Dr Vanderpuije said prohibition of commercial activities on walkways, implementation of one-way scheme at North Kaneshie to improve an alternative accesses and installation of traffic devices, such as bollards, durablocks, road signs and reflective studs at Kaneshie First Light to ease congestion were some of the measures put in place.
He said the enforcement of road traffic regulations in Accra had become necessary and entreated road users to be careful, particularly during the Christmas period.
He expressed that the government remained committed to facilitating policy development aimed at improving road safety, reduce accidents and save lives on the roads, hence the need for these strategies to ensure maximum free flow of traffic.
The Mayor gave the assurance that the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would work hard in the process of the collection of refuse from the communities to ensure free-flow of traffic.
“This is the concern of all stakeholders,” adding that; “our goal is to get through this Christmas and after that we take care of extra demands on the road and make sure we sustain the exercise,” explained.
Miss Rita Odoley Sowah, Municipal Chief Executive for La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly said LaDMA had also launched “Operation Park Right” to tow vehicles illegally parked on the road.
She appealed to drivers to stop illegal parking and warned that those selling on the pavement of Tetteh Quarshie would be cleared so that “we all have a successful exercise and pleasant celebrations.”
Mr Ben Adomah of the Accra Metro Roads Department appreciated the efforts of the Police in ensuring the free-flow of traffic in the metropolis and defusing some intentions of criminals who might take advantage of the traffic jams.
Mr Asiedu Akrofi, Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service gave the assurance that his men would not shirk their responsibilities and expressed appreciation of the efforts of the National Disaster Management Organisation and Urban Roads for their roles in managing traffic in the metropolis.
