Farmers receive improved cassava planting materials

cassavaFarmers in the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipality are being supplied with improved cassava planting materials as part of an aggressive push to raise cassava production in the area.

Mr. Lawrence Arkah Santana, the Municipal Chief Executive, said this was being done under the Root and Tuber Improvement Programme [RTIP].

Speaking at a farmers’ forum at Sefwi-Kogina he said alongside the planting materials, the farmers were also being assisted by the Food and Agriculture Ministry and the International Fertilizer Development Centre, an NGO, on the correct application of fertilizers and agro-chemicals.

Teaching them to properly handle the chemicals would also help to prevent disaster.

The forum provided the platform to discuss ways to boost food production and bring down post-harvest losses.

Mr. Arkah-Santana appealed to farmers to heed technical advice from agricultural extension officers and adopt modern farming practices.

He spoke of the government’s determination to back small-holder farmers to transform their livelihoods.

Mr. Charles Oduro-Ameyaw, the Municipal Agricultural Director, appealed to the farmers to take advantage of the expertise of the extension officers to increase crop yield and returns and should pay back agricultural inputs sold to them on credit.
