Children need quality education to be functionary in society – Director

PupilsThe Effutu Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Hilder Hagan, has urged stakeholders in education in the area to let the education of their children be their topmost priority.

She said children were assets of the country and there was therefore the need for them to acquire quality education to enable them be effective functional citizens in future.

Mrs. Hagan said this when addressing School Performance Appraisal Meeting (SPAM) forums at Winneba.

She expressed worry with the 2013 BECE results obtained in the municipality adding that the results were lukewarm approach towards education in the Municipality.

According to her, watching of television and assisting parents in trading by the children during school going hours were some causes of the poor performance.

Giving analysis of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results from 2010 to 2013, the Director said two schools in the Municipality had zero percent and one school obtained the least percentage of 12 in the 2010 examination.

She said in 2011 one school had 0% with two schools obtaining the least percentage of 15, adding that in 2012 two school scored 0% with a school obtaining the least percentage of 6.

Mrs Hagan said in 2013, the Municipality scored no zero percent but one school which is among the best schools in the district scored the least percentage of 4.5.

She said looking at the statistics given the performance of the children did not give a true picture of the Municipality where a University is situated.

Mrs. Hagan therefore called on the teachers to be more committed and give off their best as well as parents and other stakeholders to re-double their efforts to ensure that the children learn and pass their examination with good grades.

She advised the children to concentrate on their books and stop indulging in frivolous activities that wouldl not bring growth into their lives but jeopardize their future.

The Director therefore appealed to the Ghana Education Service to ensure that SPAM was organized periodically to enable stakeholders to be abreast with the performance of the children in the BECE and also come out with fruitful suggestions and ideas to help promote teaching and learning.
