Takoradi market gets 40 fire extinguishers

market1The Takoradi Market has been provided with 40 dry chemical powder fire extinguishers to serve as fire control measure.

Mr Kobina Okyere Darko, Member of Parliament for Takoradi, who donated the fire extinguishers at a ceremony at the Market Circle in the Western Region noted that, the emotional trauma business owners went through when fire occurred were very painful.

He said aside the emotional agony, thousands of cedis were also lost in the process and some businesses did not even resurrect after such encounters.

The last time the Takoradi market caught fire was six years ago when properties running into millions were destroyed and livelihood and dreams shattered.

A committee constituted to go into the cause and the level of destruction identified the lack or dysfunctional fire hydrants and the lack of fire extinguishers in the market among others.

Ms Veronica Arthur, Market Secretary then made the request to the MP to assist the market with fire extinguishers.

Fire Officer Comfort Quarmyne, in charge of the Market Fire Station said the market had not recorded any fire incident within the year despite the 1670 fires cases nationwide.

She was grateful to the MP for the gesture and said all the designated points within the market would be provided with the fire extinguisher.

Already, the market women, security officers and other attendants in the market had been trained on the use of the fire device.
