Tamale Polytechnic admits over 3,000 students
Tamale Polytechnic has admitted 2,330 students to pursue various Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes while additional 828 students also gained admission to study various non-tertiary programmes for the 2013/2014 academic year.
While a large number of students admitted for the HND programmes will undertake a three-month access courses alongside HND programmes to meet strict admission requirements set by the National Accreditation Board, admissions for the non-tertiary programmes are still in progress.
Dr Abdulai Salifu Asuro, Rector of the Polytechnic announced this in Tamale on Saturday during the polytechnic’s 19th matriculation ceremony to formally welcome fresh students to the institution.
Dr Asuro said even though the admission requirements were waived to allow for more students to be admitted, it was still not enough to get more science students to gain admissions into the technical and vocational programmes.
He said for this academic year, the polytechnic introduced three new market driven programmes which included HND Information and Communication Technology, HND Media and Mass Communication and HND Association of Business Managers and Administrators.
He added that efforts are also underway to introduce other programmes such as HND Fashion and Design, HND Purchasing and Supply and Bachelor of Technology.
He said the polytechnic could have admitted more students but was constrained by infrastructure deficits and appealed to government and the Ghana Education Trust Fund to advance resources to help complete construction works on students’ hostel facility and bungalows for teaching staff.
Dr Asuro said the polytechnic had signed memoranda of understanding with some foreign counterparts to enhance teaching and learning and advised students to take advantage of the opportunities availed them.
