Robbery reduces in Western Region – Police

shot-deadThe Western Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, said on Monday robbery in the Region had reduced by 50 percent due to proactive strategy adopted by the Command this year.

He said the Command had managed to arrest perpetrators of robbery that occurred in Tarkwa, Nsuaem, Asankragwa, Bogoso and Prestea as well as other major highways in the region.

He commended the general public for giving vital information that led to the arrest of such criminals and asked for their continued support to make the citizens live in peace and harmony.

DCOP Kofi Boakye said this during a press briefing in Sekondi on Monday on successes chalked by the Command in combating crime and measures put in place ahead of the Christmas festivities.

He said the Command had received 150 police personnel from the Police Headquarters to beef-up security in the Region and that they would be deployed with the Police Visibility and Accessibility Unit that would patrol the major highways and communities ahead of the Yuletide.

He said the police would intensify snap checks and traffic enforcement on the major highways and appealed to communities to form Community Watchdog Committees to support the police to clamp down on nefarious activities of criminals.

DCOP Boakye advised the citizenry not to keep huge sums of money on themselves and to be vigilant and report any suspicious character in their communities to the police for prompt response.

Recounting successes chalked up in combating crime, he said the police had arrested seven robbers within  the last few months at Tarkwa, Nsuaem, Prestea, Manso Amenfi and Asankragwa, including hardened criminal, Michael Tetteh while the police was stilling tracking two others, “Bullet and Justice” who are on the run.

He noted that most of the robberies occurred in mineral-rich towns and illegal gold mining sites because some gold miners wanted to sell their gold in black-markets and advised gold dealers to sell their minerals to recognised gold buyers to avoid being robbed.
