Wa Assembly disburses disability fund

cediThe Wa Municipal Assembly has since September 2011, disbursed GH₵109,000.00 from the Disability Common Fund to 200 beneficiaries in the Municipality.

This is to assist in mitigating some of the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in areas such as apprenticeship, education, trading and medical care.

Mr. Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) disclosed this at  a public forum organized by the Wa Municipal Disability Fund Management Committee to disburse GH₵21,050.00 to 39 beneficiaries.

The MCE stated that the public disbursement of the fund was to avoid smuggling of beneficiary funds into wrong hands, and to further promote transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the fund.

Mr. Putiaha stated that the Government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama believed in social justice and social protection, hence the institutionalization of the disability fund to alleviate the suffering of PWDs.

He said in furtherance of the “Better Ghana Agenda”, Government would soon expand the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme across some selected districts where poverty was endemic.

Mr. Saeed Abdul-Faruk, Disability Committee Chairman assured the National Council  on Persons with Disabilities (NCPWDs), the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) and other stakeholders in the Municipality that the committee would continue to effectively and periodically monitor the utilization of the fund by the beneficiaries and sensitize the public on the existence of the Fund.
