WAFU tourney: Benin stuns Ghana

footballBenin on Saturday handed host Ghana a painful 1-0 defeat in a Group “A” second round fixture at the on-going 2013 GOTV WAFU Cup tournament at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi.

The defeat has given the host a rude awakening of the reality on the ground, having underestimated their opponents before the clash.

Ghana, as the situation stands now, have no choice than to win convincingly against Burkina Faso in their last Group match on Monday, in order to stand the chance of making it to the next stage.

The host, with three points from two matches, occupy the third place and lying behind Benin and Burkina who are on four points apiece.

Benin’s Corea Cedric scored the only goal of the match on 88 minutes from the spot-kick.

This was after Ghana’s Kwabena Adusei handled the ball in a desperate attempt to clear a Dossou Jodel’s cross.

The host fought from all angles to redeem their image, but the likes of Mohammed Latif, Abdul Bassit and Sulley Mohammed missed in succession the chances that came their way.

Jodel, voted man of the match, was in the course of the game red-carded for misconduct.
