Three countries yet to arrive for WAFU tourney in Ghana

footballThree countries are yet to arrive for the 2013 GOTV West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup tournament beginning in Kumasi on Thursday, November 21.

With barely 24 hours to the commencement of the tournament, Burkina Faso, Niger and Liberia have still not reported for the competition that spans November 21-28.

Fred Crentsil, a member of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), told GNA Sports that the three countries’ arrival had been pushed to the opening day; Thursday.

Liberia are a late addition after Gabon pulled out on the eve of the tournament. Teams from Senegal, Benin, Sierra Leone and Togo have already began preparations in the Garden City.

Host Ghana are in Group “A” with Sierra Leone, Benin and Burkina Faso, while Togo, Senegal, Liberia and Niger make up Group “B”.

Per the regulations of the tournament, winners of the two groups progress to the finals with the runners-up playing for bronze.

Ghana takes on Sierra Leone in the opening match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi, on Thursday.
