NCCE is credible, deserves more support – NGO

Eanfoworld, a non-governmental organisation on Thursday said the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is a very credible organisation and it is unfortunate that some people are calling for its abolishment.

A statement signed by Alhaji Alhassan Abdulai, Executive Director of Eanfoworld in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the NCCE is very important organisation to the development of Ghana’s democracy and therefore deserves support from Ghanaians.

The statement said it disagreed with Dr Maurice Ampaw, President of the Legal Advocacy Foundation for advocating the scrapping of the NCCE at a forum in Tamale.

It said even though the NCCE has limited funding, it has been able to roll out many programmes to conscientise the citizenry on their rights and responsibilities under the 1992 Constitution and therefore deserves commendation and not condemnation.

“With the staff of the NCCE spread throughout the regions and districts, it has instituted flagship programmes including annual constitution week and quiz contest.

“The last constitutional week lecture was addressed by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu to help stabilise the nation ahead of the verdict given on the election petition by the Supreme Court,” it said.

The statement said the constitutional week programme which was attended by high profile personalities like former President John Agyekum Kufour and Jerry John Rawlings in Accra set the tone for national discourse on the 2012 post elections challenges that reduced the political temperature in the country.

“Community engagements by the NCCE always result in peace at the community level as many civil society groups are supported to reach out to the population in the country side and without the NCCE many civil society organisations will have died out.”

The statement said the NCCE should not be destroyed by harsh criticisms.
