Illegal miners chase farmers in Ahanta West District

galamseyFarming activities at Mbaa Mpe Ohia in Agona Nkwanta in the Ahanta West District are being seriously threatened as illegal miners are fiercely chasing away farmers in the area.

The farmers told the Ghana News Agency at Apemeyim that over the past two months they were unable to go to their farms because they were being chased with cutlasses and sticks by illegal miners from using the only route that leads to their farmlands.

Opanyin Kwesi Baaani and Madam Achowa Nyaale, leaders of the farmers, said the incessant threats by the illegal miners was greatly affecting them since  they are unable to go to farm either  to collect foodstuffs or work..

They said “Day in day out our lives are being threatened by these people. In fact, President John Mahama should come in and rescue us”.

Opanyin Baani said numerous appeals to the District Chief Executive of Ahanta West, the Kwesimintsin Police and the Minerals Commission had not yielded any positive results.

“We have also reported the latest threats on our lives by the illegal operators to the Regional Police Commander and the Regional Minister but no action has been taken”, the spokespersons said.

The farmers are therefore calling on the President to, as a matter of urgency, prevail upon the illegal miners to stop their threats to ensure that economic activities  flourish in that area.
