Public should know their NHIS rights – Director

MTN_Health InsuranceMr Lawrence Amartey, Greater Accra Regional Director of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has urged the public to learn about their rights concerning the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to ensure better service.

“We have created a call centre particularly to address complaints. We assure the public, that their complaints would be investigated and rectified, in order to improve upon the scheme. Just call short code, 6447,” he said.

Mr Amartey made this known to Ghana News Agency in Tema, during a quiz that was held for senior high school (SHS) students, as part of activities to mark 10 years of the NHIS.

He said so far, active membership with the scheme stood at 36 per cent of the country’s population, whilst 90 per cent of the populace had registered but had not renewed their membership.

Mr Amartey said as part of measures to improve upon the scheme, the NHIA had introduced biometric registration for the scheme, which had commenced on pilot basis with more than 17,000 security personnel.

“We would gradually introduce this to the entire nation, since it has proved to be very efficient.

“We are also introducing the electronic claim method, to prevent lapses, such as inflating claims or inserting fake ones,” he said.

Schools that participated in the quiz were the Ada Senior High Technical, which came first with 75 points, Great Ningo SHS, which was second with 69 points, followed by Tema Manhia SHS, which placed third and Ashaiman SHS fourth.

The winners of the quiz are expected to compete with other winners from the Central, Western, Volta and Greater Accra Regions, for the over-all national winner.
